How 20 minutes each morning can help you recharge, recenter, and change your life.
Every morning you wake up with an ocean of thoughts churning around in your head.
Many times these thoughts distract you throughout the day derailing you from focusing on and enjoying what you really want to be accomplishing.
The longer these thoughts swirl around in your head, the more your mind feels overloaded.
You want to move past these thoughts so you can get back to feeling good, but how?
I have the answer; Morning Pages.
Morning pages are three pages of longhand writing, strictly stream-of-consciousness that you write every morning. Morning pages are for draining your brain of all the thoughts that are causing you to feel gloomy, overwhelmed, and anxious.
The beauty of morning pages is that they’re not “writing” in the traditional sense. They’re about anything and everything that crosses your mind. You don’t have to worry about spelling, grammar, sentence structure, or anything else that your high school English teacher would mark in red. They are for your eyes only.
Because they’re private pages, you can write and say anything that’s on your mind. Feel free to whine, complain, criticize, analyze, write about your fears, your dreams, write about things you would never say out loud but need to get out, literally anything that comes to mind. That’s the purpose of Morning Pages.
Why I Love Morning Pages
My first experience with Morning Pages, I wrote them for 240 days straight; three pages, every day. After only a few weeks, I started to look forward to writing my pages every morning. They became a supportive friend to me.
My daily writing practice healed my life at a time when I needed it the most and helped me to move forward. After that, I didn’t feel a urgent need to write but whenever I start to feel anxious, unsteady, misunderstood, afraid, or have harmful thoughts that just won’t stop, I go back to the page.
Benefits of Morning Pages
- Morning pages help clear these thoughts away so we can focus on more creative and productive things that align with our values.
- In clearing your mind, you’re able to create space for new and better thoughts, ideas, revelations and insights.
- They unleash your creative thinking that can get lost in the busyness of everyday life.
- You’re able to work through issues that have been bothering you.
- They help to connect you with yourself on a deeper level.
A Healthy Habit
Just like with any other healthy habit that enriches your life; practicing yoga, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, etc., morning pages will also enrich your life in ways you never expected. Consider the time you reserve to write your pages as “me time”. You can even enjoy your morning coffee in the process. You deserve it!
Getting started couldn’t be easier!
Grab a spiral notebook, pen or pencil and make a commitment to write three pages every morning for the next two weeks. After two weeks of writing your pages every day, you’ll happily continue on your own free will.
Consistency is Key
Just like with other healthy habits, the more consistent you are, the better you’ll feel and when you feel good, life is good.
If you skip a day here and there, don’t worry too much about it. If you don’t quite hit three pages, that’s okay too. You may need some time to ease into three pages, that’s perfectly fine. At the end of the day, any writing you’re able to do, whether it’s one page or three pages is going to benefit you. Trust me on the three pages, for some magical reason it really works!
Some mornings, you may sit down and think “I really don’t have anything to write about today.” That can happen, write anyway. Sometimes I start with, “I have nothing to write about today” and write about that for a few sentences before something comes up and I’m writing away on something completely unexpected.
Hand Writing Your Pages is Important
It’s very important that you write your pages in longhand. I know it takes longer to write by hand, but this slowness will help you go deeper and connect you to your emotional life. In order to go deep, you must slow down.
Can something so simple be so powerful?
Yes, it really is that simple and that powerful!
