I pulled this card randomly out of a deck of cards in front of about 25 people at the end of a presentation I had just given about confidence and how to create it. I thought a fun way to wrap up a formal talk would be by sharing my Truthbomb deck for each participant to randomly select a card. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.
What are Truthbombs
Truthbombs, created by Danielle LaPorte, are handwritten cards that have declarations, ask big questions, and present spiritual reminders. They’re especially fun to share with other people whether by random trust or careful selection.
Get the Truth Party Started
When the formal part of the presentation wrapped, I got my Truthbomb deck out and explained to my audience what they were and the directions for taking a card (i.e. no peeking please, trust the process). I demonstrated by indiscriminately pulling a card from the deck. I looked at the card and immediately a smile came across my face.
You see, by this point, although I thought the presentation went well, there were a few people in the audience that I felt weren’t so sure – you can’t please everyone – another Truthbomb!
Still smiling, I read my Truthbomb card to the group, “You don’t need their approval.” I don’t know if anyone else caught the irony but it didn’t matter. The card I pulled couldn’t have been more perfect. But not just in that specific situation, in a broader sense as well.
Why We Need to Let Go of the Need for Approval
When we prioritize pleasing other people, we’re seeking approval from the outside world. Whenever we reach for something in the outside world to give us what we should be giving ourselves, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We set ourselves up to live a life that fits with what other people expect of us but doesn’t necessarily make us happy. I learned this lesson the hard way. You can read or listen to my story here.
The Truthbomb party was a big hit from the very first card. Everyone had a great time trusting the universe and picking a card from the deck. It turned out to be a great conversation starter as they shared their message with others in the group and discussed how the message they received applied to them personally, professionally, or both. Everyone had fun with it; they were inspired and motivated, and left the presentation happy and ready to take on the day.
I keep the Truthbomb card I chose that day on my desk to remind myself that yes; I don’t need anyone’s approval. I believe in myself and the work I do as a business and life coach. It reminds me to just keep doing me and all will be well. The same goes for you too!
Ideas for Sharing Truthbombs
There are lots of ways to share Truthbombs. Use them to as a conversation starter, after a formal talk or presentation, slip them into a card sent in the mail for someone that could use some carefully selected truth, or leave them behind in your favorite café as a surprise for a lucky stranger to discover. Be creative, there are no rules.
