Many people wonder about the effectiveness of coaching over the phone versus in person. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first.
Up until the point when I started to train to be a life coach, my preferred communication method was face-to-face meetings. It didn’t take me long to come around tho.
One of the reasons I chose the life coach training program I did was because I wanted to learn from who I thought was the best coach out there, Martha Beck. I had been coached by a Martha Beck trained coach years earlier and I knew I wanted to learn her methods.
But first, I had to get my head around the fact that Martha’s life coach training was all technology based, outside of a weekend workshop midway. If I was going to be trained by Martha, I had to embrace her training program where all the training and coaching interactions were done over the phone, video conference and recorded sessions. I knew Martha was the best, so I put my full trust in her methods, and I’m so glad I did.
I started coaching clients early in my training. Because my first couple of clients were local, I started coaching with them in person. But after only a short time of experiencing phone coaching in my training program, I understood firsthand the power, effectiveness and convenience of using technology for coaching. Quite quickly, I transitioned to coaching clients exclusively over the phone. I offer video conferencing for clients who prefer face-to-face sessions and if a client is local, I’m happy to meet in person for the introductory session.
Here’s why coaching over the phone is so effective.
Benefits of Phone Coaching
The conversation is more focused.
Without visual information, which can be distracting for both the coach and the client, there is less data to process and you’re able to focus your attention on the words being said. Eliminating visual distractions allows for a deeper conversation.
You can relax more in your own space.
Being in the comfort and safety of your own space allows you to be more relaxed making it easier to concentrate and discuss sensitive topics.
There’s no commute.
Eliminating a commute saves you time and frustration with the hassles of traveling. It also makes it easier to show up for coaching sessions keeping the momentum going helping you progress faster.
It’s easier to schedule.
You can be more flexible in the times you receive coaching. Some clients have very busy schedules and they are only available late evenings and early mornings. For people who don’t have time for a session during the working day, telephone coaching is ideal.
You’ll be able to receive coaching in any location you wish as long as you have a phone. Plus, you don’t have to worry about what to wear. You can get coaching in your pj’s if that’s what’s most comfortable for you.
You can connect with your most ideal coach.
For coaching to be effective, it’s important that you select the right coach for you. It’s highly likely that your most ideal coach will not be local. With virtual coaching, you’ll be able to select from coaches located anywhere in the world.
